Artificial intelligence and machine learning

In computer science, artificial intelligence, sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, unlike the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals. Nowadays, artificial intelligence is a hot topic in the computer science community. People are increasingly getting attracted towards this field of study. This branch has already gained a whole heap of popularity in many countries, but the field is still on a rising stage in India.  In such a scenario, it is necessary for people in general to know about this field.

As was mentioned earlier, artificial intelligence involves machines behaving like animals and humans. It is the science which helps us to make machines do the work that can be done by humans as well. Artificial intelligence (AI) makes it possible for machines to learn from experience, adjust to new inputs and perform human-like tasks. Most AI examples that you hear about today – from chess-playing computers to self-driving cars – rely heavily on deep learning and natural language processing. Using these technologies, computers can be trained to accomplish specific tasks by processing large amounts of data and recognizing patterns in the data.

The term artificial intelligence was coined in 1956, but AI has become more popular today thanks to increased data volumes, advanced algorithms, and improvements in computing power and storage. AI has evolved to provide many specific benefits in every industry.

With AI comes another term machine learning.

Machine learning is the study of computer algorithms that improve automatically through experience. It is often seen as a subset of artificial intelligence. AI helps in achieving the objective of machine learning, that is, making machines learning from surrounding and becoming smart. We can understand this very easily if we consider the feeds or recommendations that we get on various social media platforms. It shows the kind of content that we would like to see, or matches our taste. The algorithm is such that the application learns from the contents that you have already seen and shows you similar ones. This is exactly what happens in machine learning. It’s a similar algorithm used in different circumstances.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence finds use in various sectors. From medical facilities to aerospace industry to defence machinery, the technology is becoming popular due to usefulness.

There has been a lot of arguments regarding the threat that this may possess against humans. Whenever we say that machines will be learning from their surroundings, the idea of huge robots and giants taking over the world comes to our minds. But right now, we are nowhere close to achieving that kind of advancement. It is humans who will always be responsible for making such machines and innovating them.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are playing a huge role in development of our race. By learning and knowing more about this, we could be a part of this revolution. We never know how far will this technology take us. With various developments being made in these fields, it holds a lot of scope for future.
